YEARS OF ORGANIZING EFFORTS WILL COME DOWN TO THIS WEEK’S VOTE DETERMINING THE VIABILITY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND RESIDENT AND FELLOW ALLIANCE ORGANIZED UNDER AFT MARYLAND, WHICH REPRESENTS A NUMBER OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ACROSS THE STATE. IT TO TALK ABOUT THE PAY TO TALK ABOUT SOME OTHER INEQUITIES. THAT’S OCCURRING ON THE JOB. SO ALL I CAN SAY IS, IS THAT BASICALLY THE TIME IS RIGHT. FOLKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WANT A UNION. IT WOULD BE THE FIRST RESIDENT PHYSICIAN UNIT IN MARYLAND. IT WOULD REPRESENT HUNDREDS OF WORKERS. THE UNION WILL PUSH FOR HIGHER SALARIES AND IMPROVED BENEFITS WHILE ALLOWING THE RESIDENTS TO SPEAK UP FOR PATIENT CONCERNS AND ADVOCATE IF THEY SEE ISSUES AROUND THE HOSPITAL. WE HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE SURROUNDING US WHO ARE TRYING TO ADVOCATE FOR US, BUT WE FINALLY DECIDED, YOU KNOW, IT WAS TIME FOR US AS INDIVIDUALS, AS RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS TO HAVE A SEAT AT THE TABLE AS WELL. RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS SAY IT COMES DOWN TO QUALITY OF LIFE CONCERNS IN A COST AND TAXING CAREER. OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, WE’VE SEEN REALLY A SURGE IN UNIONIZATION ACROSS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES FOR OUR RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS. WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF THE IMPROVEMENTS THAT UNIONIZATION HAS MADE FOR THOSE OTHER HOSPITALS AND FOR THOSE RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS. UMMC SENT 11 NEWS A STATEMENT TODAY READS IN PART, QUOTE, THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, UMMC HAS CONSISTENTLY AND STRONGLY SUPPORTED EVERY RESIDENT’S RIGHT TO BE HEARD. The vote will determine the viability of the University of Maryland Resident and Fellow Alliance, organized under AFT-Maryland, which represents a number of health professionals across the state."To be able to voice their concerns, to talk about the pay, to talk about some other inequities that are happening on the job. So, all I can say is, basically, the time is ripe. Folks across the country want a union," AFT Maryland president Kenya Campbell said.It would be the first resident physician unit in Maryland and would represent hundreds of workers. The union will push for higher salaries and improved benefits while allowing the residents to speak up for patient concerns and advocate if they see issues around the hospital."We have a lot of people surrounding us who are trying to advocate for us, but we finally decided it's time for us as individuals, as residents and fellows, to have a seat at the table as well," internal medicine resident Jessica Leuchtenburg said.Residents and fellows said it comes down to quality of life concerns in a costly and taxing career."Over the past several years, we've seen really a surge in unionization across the United States for residents and fellows. We've seen a lot of the improvements that unionization has made for those other hospitals and for those residents and fellows," child and adolescent psychiatry fellow Chelsea Cosner said.In a statement to 11 News, the University of Maryland Medical Center said:"UMMC residents and fellows are highly respected members of our health care team.
