When Alicia Gordon Hail Fabens was 9 years old, she heard the sound of bullets pinging off the side of the boat as her family steamed down the Yangtze River while fleeing China. Her father, the Rev. Dr.

William J. Hail, was the dean of Yale-in-China at Chagsha. Like most Western missionaries in the Chinese interior, he was forced to leave his post because of civil unrest. Mrs. Fabens, her two sisters and a brother thought it was a great adventure.

Their mother, who had to leave her husband behind as he secured the college, had a different view of traveling under such conditions with four small children. Mrs. Fabens, 79, died Saturday at her home in Fort Myers, Fla. The Hail family settled in Wooster. Rev.

Hail was a professor of history at the College of Wooster. Alicia Hail had a deep interest in Scouting that resulted in the founding of the first Girl Scout troop in Wooster. She graduated from Northfield School in Northfield, and later from Wooster. She married A. Lawrie Fabens Jr.

in 1939. They had been friends since the seventh grade. As a young mother, Mrs. Fabens was instrumental in founding a nursery school in Wooster. The Fabenses moved to Bay Village, then to Shaker Heights.

She had lived there from 1950 to 1981, when they moved to Fort Myers. Mrs. Fabens was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Shaker Heights and had worked in the thrift shop as a member of the Altar Guild. She played golf at Shaker Heights Country Club. In 1983, the Fabenses traveled entirely by water in their trawler from Fort Myers to their summer home at Georgian Bay, Point au Baril, Ontario, via the East Coast, the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes.

They returned to Florida 4 John Tkacz, known in Tremont as 'Mr. Fix-it' By ZINA VISHNEVSKY PLAIN DEALER REPORTER CLEVELAND John Tkacz was the link between Tremont, the neighborhood where he lived almost all his life, and St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral, where he was a lifelong member and where his son serves as president of the parish council. A generous man, he would help his neighbors at any time, day or night. He was well-known as the neighborhood fix-it man.

Mr. Tkacz, 66, of Cleveland, died of a heart attack while visiting a friend Saturday in Cleve- Elmer Barbee, 73, worked as Democratic volunteer EAST CLEVELAND Elmer Lee Barbee was a volunteer for Democratic Party candidates for decades. He worked in the campaigns of former Mayor Carl B. Stokes and Rep. Louis Stokes in the 1960s and former Cleveland President George L.

Forbes in the 1970s. He most recently worked for the election of State Rep. C.J. Prentiss. Mr.

Barbee died Friday at Meridia Huron Hospital. He was 73. He was born in Little Rock, Ark. He served in the Army during World War II. He lived in Cleveland briefly in 1946, then took a job in Detroit.

He returned to Cleveland in 1951, married Carrie Maebelle Long, and settled here. Mr. Barbee worked for the Ford Co. for 32 years, until i he retired in 1985. He then stepped up his volunteer activities at St.

James I Lutheran Church in East Cleveland. His wife died in 1987. Two daughters are also deceased. Mr. Barbee is survived by daughters, Amy and Kathy Boone, both of Cleveland; three brothers; a sister; 31 grandchildren; and a number of greatgrandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. James Lutheran Church, 1424 Hayden East Cleveland. Arrangements are being handled by Watson's Funeral Home of Cleveland. Florence E.

Mr. Scholl, 79, of Medina, died Sunday? at the Life Care Center of Medina. The Cleveland native lived in Medina County for the last three years. Mr. Scholl's wife, Edie, died in 1970.

Alice Squires, 81, founded and ran a tax business EATON TOWNSHIP Alice Squires turned her mathematics and record keeping skills into a successful career as a bookkeeper and income tax consultant. She owned and operated an Block tax office in Amherst for seven years before starting her own business the Squires Tax Service in Eaton Township in 1976. She retired i in 1984.

Mrs. Squires, 81, of Eaton Township, died Monday at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria. She was born in Cleveland and lived in the North Eaton section of Eaton Township for the last 40 years. Nursing was the first vocation that Mrs. Squires pursued.

She worked for several years as a nurse after graduating from a nursing school in Buffalo, but she found bookkeeping more interesting. From 1967 until 1977, while working as a bookkeeper, Mrs. Squires also was a real estate agent for C.E. Martin Realty in North Ridgeville. She was a North Eaton polling precinct judge for many years.

Mrs. Squires was a inember of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Columbia Township, the Retired Senior Volunteers Program of Lorain County, North Ridgeville Senior Citizens and the Democratic Women's Club. She raised co*cker spaniels. Crocheting, travel, music, dancing and cooking were among her other interests.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Albert son, Jacob Frederick Bruce of Waynesburg, daughter, Patricia Bischof of North Ridgeville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother. By ALANA BARANICK PLAIN DEALER REPORTER AVON LAKE Ellen Trivanovich was responsible for children learning to swim in Avon Lake since the 1940s. Miss Trivanovich, 81, of Avon Lake, died Sunday at the Amherst Manor Nursing Home in Amherst.

In 1940, she began working as a lifeguard and giving water safety instructions at Avon Lake Park along Lake Erie. For the next 22 years, with the exception of a stint in the Women's Army Corps during World War II, Miss Trivanovich was employed at the park and crusaded to have an inground municipal swimming pool built. Her dream became a reality in 1962 with the opening of the Avon Lake Pool and her appointment as its manager. She also served as a swimming instructor and directed swimming programs at the pool two blocks south of the lake. In 1985, Miss Trivanovich became the first woman to be inducted into the Avon Lake Sports Hall of Fame.

Shortly after she retired from most of her duties at the pool in 1992, the facility was renamed the Ellen Trivanovich Municipal Pool of Avon Lake in her honor. She was born in Brimfield, and had lived for 70 years in Avon Lake. The 1934 Avon Lake High School graduate worked for the Works Progress Administration's recreation division as a lifeguard at Lakeview and Century parks in Lorain in 1938. A year later, she was named supervisor of swimming programs at the Lorain YMCA. For 55 years, she volunteered at the American Red Cross, teaching water safety courses at swimming facilities throughout Lorain County.

During the fall, winter and spring months from 1953 until 1981, she drove a bus for the Avon Lake schools. She also became Avon Lake's first policewoman, a post she held for five years. Survivors include her sisters, Mildred Heyslinger of Lorain and Doris Jurisin of Winter Park, and brother, George of Findlay. Services will be at 10 a.m. "tomorrow at St.

He was with the 522nd Armored Engineer Company in Fort Knox, before serving in Germany for 20 months as a corporal. He was a combat construction and demolitions expert. for about 10 years before he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office. store, in its present location for 72 years, after her husband died in 1970. Mrs. Farley, 73, of Munson Township, died Monday at Geauga Regional Hospital.

She was born in Burton Township and had lived in the same house since 1939. Mrs. Farley worked as a precinct judge for the Geauga County Board of Elections. When her children were young, she was a 4-H adviser. She enjoyed reading and sewing.

Mrs. Farley is survived by daughters, Lois Blair of London, Ohio, Beth Victor and Linda, both Newbury Township, and Carol of Munson Township; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters. Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Chardon. Anthony Frank Karlovec, 83, Cleveland firefighter SOLON Anthony Frank Karlovec was a Cleveland firefighter for 33 years.

After he retired from Station 25 on Broadway in 1973, he traveled extensively, seeing 47 of the 50 states. He fished in Canada every summer for 30 years. Mr. Karlovec died Sunday at the Kensington Care Center in Aurora. He was 83.

He was born in Cleveland and was reared in the E. 89th St.Quincy Ave. area. He played on the city champion football team at East Technical High School, where he graduated in 1932. He joined the Fire Department in 1940.

He moved to Solon 23 years ago, after living in Maple Heights for 20 years. He was a charter member of the Babes of 1916 Senior Baseball League, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Club and Knights of Columbus Valley Council 4893. He attended St. Rita Catholic Church.

in Cleveland. For the last seven years, he manufactured and marketed EZBEND, a piece of equipment used by electricians to bend PVC tubes. He recently invented an improved technology for the same purpose. A patent for the EZ-2X is pending approval from the U.S. Patent Office.

Because of illness, he resigned last year after serving as president of the Inventors Connection in Cleveland for five years. Mr. Bradshaw, 62, of Cleveland, died of complications of cancer Dec. 2 at his home. He was born in Wilkinsburg, and lived in Northfield before he moved to Cleveland's West Park neighborhood, where he had lived the last 37 years.

After attending Fenn College, he worked as an electrical designer for W.W. Clark Co. in Cleveland for 19 years. Afterward, he became general manager at the former Thermotools an electricians' tool-supply company in Cleveland. During most of the 1970s, Mr.

Bradshaw served as president of the Cleveland Aquarium Society. DEATHS ELSEWHERE An avid fish lover, he turned his hobby into a profitable According to his son, he had more than 100 tanks in his basem*nt, where he became one of the first people to successfully breed Plecostomus, also known as suckermouth catfish, a fish native to southern and southeastern Brazil. He preferred to breed challenging South American freshwater fish, including discus cichlid, a species that requires deep tanks, and piranha, which require live feed. He sold the fish to local fish shops and conducted a mailorder business. Mr.

Bradshaw extended love of fish when he began scuba diving about 15 years ago. He enjoyed the Cayman Islands and the Florida Keys. But he claimed: to have had some of his best dives along Bimini in the Bahamas, because it was SO isolated and bright. Mr. Bradshaw is survived by his wife of 41 years, Katharine; son, William of Los Angeles, who has been managing Bradshaw Manufacturing since his father became ill; daughter, Sherry of Lorain; and two brothers.

A publicist for actor Carroll O'Connor, Frank Tobin, said his death was caused by complications Rollins from lymphoma. In "The Heat of the Night," Rollins starred opposite 0'Connor as a black detective from Singer Faron Young; NASHVILLE, Tenn. Country singer Faron Young, 64, died yesterday after shooting himself in the head. Friend and band member Ray Emmitt found the singer after he shot himself Monday in his house.
