Omnipod 5 is a wearable insulin device that can be used by people age 2 years and older with Type 1 diabetes. It comes with a wearable Pod that delivers insulin under your skin, and a handheld Controller that you can use to control your insulin dose. Alternatively, you can also use an app to control your insulin dose through compatible phones. How to set up your Omnipod 5:
It's important to complete training on how to use Omnipod 5 properly and safely.
You can use either the Controller that comes with Omnipod 5 or the Omnipod 5 app on a compatible smartphone to control your insulin dose.
Watch the instructional video to set up your Omnipod 5 app or Controller. You'll need some information about your settings from your healthcare provider.
After completing the Omnipod 5 app or Controller setup, watch the video on how to set up a new Pod.
Before handling the Omnipod 5 Pod, wash your hands to prevent an infection.
Once the Omnipod 5 Pod has been filled with insulin, it must be paired to the Controller or app within 2 hours. Once paired, the Pod must be applied to your skin within 60 minutes.
How to start using your Omnipod 5:
Choose a site on your body where you'd normally inject insulin (e.g., stomach or back of the arm) and wash it with soap and water. Dry the area with a clean towel. Next, wipe the site with an alcohol swab and let it air-dry.
Remove the tab and white paper backing covering the adhesive pad on the Omnipod 5 Pod.
Apply the Omnipod 5 Pod onto your skin (horizontal or diagonal on your stomach, hip, lower back, or buttocks, or up and down or at a slight angle on your upper arm or thigh). Press down firmly to secure the Pod.
Try not to place the Pod on areas of damaged or irritated skin, or within 1-inch of your belly button. If you're using Omnipod 5 with the Dexcom G6 CGM, make sure to place them on the same side of the body at sites that are close to each other. There's a video available on more information on how to place the Pod.
Squeeze the skin around the Omnipod 5 Pod and tap "Start" on the Controller or app. Stop squeezing your skin when the app or Controller asks if the cannula (a thin tube that goes under the skin) is properly inserted.
Next, you'll be prompted to connect the Dexcom G6 transmitter. Continue with this step if you choose to use your Omnipod 5 with a Dexcom G6 CGM. Keep in mind that it could take up to 20 minutes to pair the devices. This step is only necessary if you'll be using Automated Mode. Watch the video on how to connect Omnipod 5 to the Dexcom G6.
How to remove an Omnipod 5 Pod:
Before placing a new Omnipod 5 Pod, make sure to deactivate and remove the old Pod. To do so, go to the Pod Info tab on the Controller or app and tap "Change Pod" and then "Deactivate Pod."
Remove the deactivated Pod by gently lifting the edge of the adhesive tap and slowly pulling the Pod off of your skin.

When will Omnipod 5 work with the iPhone?

The Omnipod 5 is currently not compatible with iPhones. But there is an iPhone app in development. Until it's released, you can use Omnipod 5 with the wireless Controller that comes with your prescription.
Is Dexcom G7 compatible with Omnipod 5?

No. Dexcom G7 is currently not compatible with Omnipod 5. However, the company that makes Omnipod 5 is working on making this possible. As of now, Omnipod 5 can be used with the Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitor.
Why is my Omnipod 5 in limited mode?

One common reason your Omnipod 5 system might be in limited mode is that the Pod isn't receiving glucose values from the Dexcom G6 transmitter. This happens during the two-hour warm-up period after applying a new Dexcom G6 Sensor, for example. It could also happen if the Dexcom G6 transmitter loses communication with the Omnipod 5 Pod. During this time, Omnipod 5 will deliver basal (background) insulin based on what you entered into the settings and your past insulin delivery. To prevent connectivity issues, make sure the Pod and Sensor are placed on the same side of your body.
How much insulin does Omnipod 5 hold?

Each Omnipod 5 Pod can hold up to 200 units of U-100 rapid-acting insulin, such as Novolog or Humalog. Keep in mind that the Omnipod 5 Pod must be filled with at least 85 units to work properly.
How often do you change Omnipod 5?

Each Omnipod 5 Pod can be used for up to 72 hours (3 days). You'll hear an alarm letting you know when it's time to change your Pod soon. After you deactivate and remove the old Pod, make sure to place the new Pod in a different location. Doing so can help prevent irritation and allow your skin to heal. Your provider might have you change your Pod more often, so make sure to ask how frequently you should change it.
Is Omnipod 5 waterproof?

Yes, the Omnipod 5 Pod is waterproof in up to 25 feet of water for up to 60 minutes. This means you can shower while wearing the Omnipod 5 Pod. However, it's not recommended to expose the Pod to extreme temperatures, such as a hot tub or sauna. Doing so could damage the insulin inside of the Pod. Keep in mind that the Controller isn't waterproof, so make sure to keep it away from water.
What's the difference between Automated Mode and Manual Mode on the Omnipod 5?

You can only use the Automated Mode on the Omnipod 5 when it's paired with the Dexcom G6 CGM. In Automated Mode, your Omnipod 5 uses the glucose readings from the Dexcom G6 CGM and automatically adjusts your insulin dose every 5 minutes based on your current and predicted glucose levels to keep you in your target blood sugar range. Keep in mind that when you use the Automated Mode, you still need to manually deliver a bolus dose of insulin for meals and snacks. In Manual Mode, Omnipod 5 delivers insulin using a programmed basal (background) insulin rate that you'll need to discuss with your provider. In this mode, it doesn't automatically adjust your insulin dose for you.
How does Omnipod 5 compare to Omnipod DASH?

Both Omnipod 5 and Omnipod DASH are tubeless insulin delivery devices that come with Pods and a handheld device that you can use to track and control your insulin delivery. Pods from both devices allow 3 days of continuous insulin delivery. But there are some differences: (1) First, the Omnipod DASH is approved for use in people of all ages with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, while Omnipod 5 can only be used in people age 2 years and older with type 1 diabetes. (2) Second, the Omnipod 5 can be paired up with the Dexcom G6 CGM, whereas the Omnipod DASH can't. Pairing with the Dexcom G6 means you no longer need fingerstick testing with the Omnipod 5. In addition, the Omnipod 5 can automatically adjust your insulin dose based on your glucose readings from Dexcom G6. (3) Lastly, the Omnipod 5 can be used with an app on an approved smartphone or the handheld device, whereas the Omnipod DASH can only be used with the handheld device it comes with. What are the risks and warnings for Omnipod 5?
Omnipod 5 can cause some serious health issues. This risk may be even higher for certain groups. If this worries you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about other options.
Low or high blood sugar
Before using Omnipod 5, make sure you receive proper training from your healthcare provider. They'll help you program the settings into Omnipod 5. Adjusting your setting incorrectly could lead to the wrong amount of insulin getting delivered, which could cause low or high blood sugar. If left untreated, these conditions could be life-threatening. Always keep an emergency kit with you in case Omnipod 5 stops working or you develop symptoms of low blood sugar (e.g., sweating, confusion, weakness). Make a plan with your healthcare provider on what to do if you develop symptoms of low or high blood sugar or "LOW" or "HIGH" glucose sensor values or blood glucose readings while using Omnipod 5.
Changes in altitude
Sudden changes in altitude can affect the Omnipod 5 Pod's insulin delivery. This could happen during a flight in an airplane or on amusem*nt park rides, for example. Make sure to check your glucose frequently in situations where a sudden change in air pressure, altitude, or gravity is possible.
Oxygen rich or high pressure environments
Don't use Omnipod 5 in oxygen rich environments (e.g., hyperbaric chambers). This could cause the Omnipod 5 Pod or Controller to explode, which could cause severe burns on your body. Additionally, using Omnipod 5 in high pressure environments like hyperbaric chambers can damage the Pod and Controller, which could lead to high blood sugar.
Only use trusted Wi-Fi networks
Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks (e.g., coffee shops, airports) because these networks aren't secure. This could expose your Controller or phone to malware.
Infection
Although rare, it's possible that wearing a Omnipod 5 Pod could cause an infection. Each time you change your Pod, check for signs of infection such as bleeding, pain, and redness. If you notice irritation near your Pod, contact your healthcare provider.

People ages 2 years and older: Place a new filled Pod on the stomach, front or side of the thighs, back of the arms, or the buttocks (or lower back for adults only) once every 2 to 3 days, or after delivering 200 units of insulin.
