This is tracking $40 million, just like everything has been tracking $40 million and opening $10 million less.
Who is the audience for this? Martin Lawrence is 59 and Will Smith is 55. The first Bad Boys was made so long ago, Don Simpson produced it.
Millennials are staying in for stars in their 40s so it stands to reason X-llenials are also going to wait for this on streaming.
$29 million opening.

by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 6, 2024 1:36 AM |
Generation X and millennials are not going to the movies for any action movies with stars their age. That will be the truth for black and white audiences.
Hollywood needed to reconnect with audiences by bringing in new material. Even last year we saw a major flop with old action hero Harrison Ford. And Tom Cruise’s MI7 saw a significant dropoff. These franchises are too old and the actors are too stale. Bad Boys will continue the downward trend.

Hollywood is becoming more cost conscious and less risk averse, so fewer total movies are going to be made over time. There has been a dark, noticeable absence of twinks from almost any popular films. This has obviously crashed and burned Marvel and Star Wars franchises already because they’re sh*tting on an entire demographic. The drought of celeb twinks coming out since Noah Schnapp is also because twinks are just not around anymore. It’s even easier to hire UK heteros for American gay roles. lol capitalism is doing its thing tho I guess

The third movie, BAD BOYS FOR LIFE, came out in early 2020, and was a smash hit in theaters, topping the box office for 3 weeks.
Of course, this was just before Covid and before Will Smith disgraced himself at the Oscars.

Bad Boys for Life WAS the reunion movie. It was made after a 17 year absence. This was made after a four year absence. In between, Will Smith ruined his reputation and COVID destroyed habitual moviegoing.
I would be very surprised if it doesn’t underperform. Every action movie starring a star over 40 has bombed.
This is a pattern. Two Henry Cavill movies, a Ryan Gosling movie, a Chris Hemsworth movie. The audience for action movies with anyone over forty has abandoned habitual moviegoing.
Meanwhile, what is essentially an action movie merged with a character driven drama, The Last of Us, has made a nearly fifty year old Hispanic gay man one of the most popular actors in the world. Because the audience for this kind of entertainment not only wants to see it at home, but they want to see something they can emotionally invest in. They avoid movies because they have been trained to expect better quality than the glib product that blockbuster action movies typically deliver. And for that, you can blame Game of Thrones. In which he also appeared.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 6, 2024 2:31 PM |
Even better example. The biggest breakout star of the year is a fifty two year man who has been acting for thirty years. Again, a genre blend of sci fi action movie with character drama.
This is what people in their 30s and 40s want to see. They will only go out for the occasional spectacle, like Barbenheimer or Dune. The kind of movies Tom Cruise made in his forties like Minority Report and War of the Worlds could not be made for theaters today, with an actor also in his forties. But they would be phenomenal hits on television.

Twisters made a big mistake by casting a very bland, very forgettable looking Daisy Edgar-Jones in the role. I do not know why Hollywood will go to the mat for these identical British actresses. They needed to cast someone from the South or Midwest, because this is a red state event film. Powell was the perfect actor for this.

The bottom line is that people don't want to see movies in a public movie theatre anymore. The writing has been on the wall and getting increasingly louder for several decades now. Hollywood ignored it. There's really nothing else to say.

People want to see movies in theaters but Hollywood does not give them anything other than same franchises that they have seen for decades. Movies are considered expensive now, they don’t want to spend money on something they’ve already seen.

I don’t think people do want to see movies in the theater anymore, R36. It’s like work from home. Everyone has the resources and the equipment to do it from the comfort of their homes (televisions are cheap, broadband is low latency and high speed) so why spend $30 at the theatre.
Hollywood needs to get with the program and start pricing its streaming offerings accordingly.
But until that happens I am so cute.

The TWISTERS trailer and cast look so 'woke,'
i.e. diverse crew and female leader.
99% of storm chasers are white and male.
Very, very few females or POC.

The original film got that right.

Storm chasing is really a white man's domain.

R41, Helen Hunt was the lead of the original Twister, and Jami Gertz had a significant (and incredibly annoying) supporting role behind Bill Paxton and Cary Elwes. The gender composition of the leads is essentially the same as it was in 1996, and the major difference in casting is more Latino characters (Brandon Perea, Anthony Ramos).
This isn't a female Ghostbusters situation by any means.

Bill Paxton was not supporting in TWISTER.
Yes, Helen Hunt was the main protagonist, but Paxton was the leader of the crew and has the same amount of screen time as Hunt.
When he arrives at the beginning of the movie to get her to sign the divorce papers, the crew (with Hunt at the helm) has been struggling without him.
When a twister suddenly hits, they talk Paxton into taking over and you know the rest of the movie.
After that, they're practically in every scene together to the very end.

That's not true. It made its premiere last fall at TIFF and was due to come out at the beginning of 2024, but New Regency dumped it and Focus picked it right up. And as for promos, you can't drive a quarter mile in LA without seeing a billboard for it.

Once Republicans take over EVERYTHING, there will be a figurative culling of foreign actors, who have benefited greatly from the Democrats' complete takeover of Hollywood within the past 20 years and going farther left, politically.
It is Democrats who believe in "OPEN BORDERS FOR EVERYTHING (AND SCREW MY FELLOW AMERICANS)."
Whereas Republicans believe in "AMERICA FIRST FOR EVERYTHING (AND SCREW EVERYONE ELSE)."

The fourthquel (this one)… showed 50% under 35 with 44% Black, 26% Hispanic and Latino, 18% Caucasian and 12% Asian American/other buying tickets.”
This is what is interesting. It went from 60% black/Hispanic to 70% black/Hispanic. Caucasians dropped 12%!
Now I think I understand why this held up. Because this is one few well know franchises with Black stars. So Black and Hispanic audiences who probably are going to the theater just as infrequently as everyone else, chose to show up for this because it’s the kind of thing that Hollywood doesn’t even offer any more outside Michael B. Jordan. If Jonathan Majors didn’t destroy his career he could be making blockbuster action movies with Michael B. Jordan. So now it’s just Michael B. Jordan and he makes one movie every two years.
Bottom line, theaters are still f*cked.

I think this is probably the first time in a longtime where there is not a high profile black comedian or comic actor that Hollywood is trying to make into the next Eddie Murphy or Chris Tucker.
Black comic actors were the biggest and most reliable stars in Hollywood at one point - now Hollywood doesn’t make the films in which they can use to launch careers.

Hollywood breathes a sigh of relief as the film appears to be doing better than expected. But weekend two will likely have a 60 percent (or more) drop.

Inside Out 2 I would not be shocked for underperforming because I don’t think Pixar has as much value as a brand like when Inside Out came out. Inside Out was nine years ago; that movie premiered at Cannes, and it was something that was launched on Pixar’s reputation for adult appealing stories. Inside Out 2 feels “Disney”; it feels like a kiddie movie. The poster is very childish, like a Muppets show for Preschoolers. I also think Disney did incredible damage to its brand with the launch of DisneyPlus and the decision to route its movies there during the pandemic; I think Lightyear in particular damaged the audiences’ trust in “unnecessary” IP. If Inside Out was such an important movie they wouldn’t have waited nine years.
The poster seems designed to move merchandise.., but how many kids will want an ”Anxiety” plush?
