Get a Head Start on Allergy Season with Acupuncture

Posted by Ingri Boe-Wiegaard & filed under Wellness.

Breathe Easy with Acupuncture!

It’s not just Spring,it’s Allergy Season! Acupuncture is a holistic way to keep your allergies at bay.

It was a long winter, for certain. And it’s not like you don’t appreciate the beauty of the flowers and the budding of the trees. You just know what it means. Weeks of sneezing, nose-blowing, headaches…and that’s just the average symptoms.

An allergy is an immune system disorder that occurs when your body has an inflammatory, hypertensive reaction to what is a normally benign substance. Like pollen. Common conditions such as hay fever, eczema, hives and asthma are actually allergic reactions; others include food allergies, reactions to bee stings, and certain medications.

There are two main factors that can make you susceptible to allergens — host and environmental factors.

Host factors are items that are genetic (race, age, gender, and heredity) while environmental factors are exposure to pollution, diseases, and exposure to high levels of allergens, particularly at a young age.

Most treatments aim to reduce the discomfort of the symptoms temporarily, and they often come with negative side effects.

Enjoy the Outdoorswith Acupuncture

Acupuncture is always in season.

Acupuncture is one of the major holistic therapies used forthousands of years to address the underlying energetic relationships in the body that makes those allergic reactions happen. Acupuncture treatments aim to, and yes, give immediate relief from the symptoms, and further, it can address the variety of underlying causes.

Point sites for the underlying causes will be found on an individual basis after a thorough case history. Point sites for immediate relief include local points near the actual symptom places such as the sinus areas, and others not so obvious to understand such as near the hands or feet. The point sites are always on the skin and the surface of the body. A patient will happily experience immediate improvement of the symptoms.

Long term? The symptoms stop, and the reactiveness calms down.

You can get back to your regularly scheduled life. Enjoy the outdoors again and breathe deep!

Asthma Sufferers — Acupuncture Is a Breath of Fresh Air

Suffer from Asthma? Breathe Easier with Acupuncture!

Breathe Easier with Acupuncture!

Do you or someone you love suffer from asthma? You’re not alone — approximately 20 million Americans have asthma, 9 million of them children. In fact, asthma is the most common chronic childhood illness. About half of all cases develop before the age of 10, and many children with asthma also have allergies.

Who gets asthma? Well, asthma is most likely caused by several factors. It could be in your genes — you’re more likely to develop asthma if others in your family have it.For those who are prone to it, exposure to environmental factors such as allergens, substances that cause an allergic reaction, or infections may increase the chance of developing asthma as well.

Most people with asthma may go for periods of time without any symptoms, then have an asthma attack. Some people have chronic shortness of breath that gets worse during an attack. Asthma attacks can last minutes to days, and can become dangerous if airflow to the lungs becomes severely restricted.

Allergens Can Play a Part in Asthma

Primary symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing — usually begins suddenly; may be worse at night or early in the morning; can be made worse by cold air, exercise, and heartburn
  • Chest tightness
  • Cough (dry or with sputum) — in cough-variant asthma, this may be the only symptom

There are typically two types of asthma—extrinsic and intrinsic—and both will respond to acupuncture. Intrinsic asthma is caused by factors such as chemicals, cold air, exercise, infection and emotional upset. Extrinsic asthma is allergy-related and is triggered by pollen, dust, mold and animal dander.

Acupuncture acts on the nervous system by soothing the parasympathetic nerves while stimulating the sympathetic nerves. This causes the bronchioles to expand and mucus membranes to contract, leading to improved breathing. Acupuncture also reduces the level of inflammatory chemicals in the blood, thereby reducing the allergic response.

The effects of acupuncture are cumulative. After a series of treatments, patients notice a reduction in the frequency and severity of their attacks. Acupuncture has the effect of strengthening a person’s constitution and overall health so that their allergic response is reduced.

You Wanted Spring…But the Allergies? Acupuncture Gives Allergy Relief!

Enjoy Spring! Allergy Relief with Acupuncture!

Spring’s sprung, your allergies have been triggered and your nose and eyes are running in fear. What do you do?

It was a long winter, for certain. And it’s not like you don’t appreciate the beauty of the flowers and the budding of the trees. But…you know what it means. Weeks of sneezing, nose-blowing, headaches…and that’s just the average symptoms.

It’s not just Spring…it’sALLERGY SEASON.

There are several types of tests you can take to gauge exactly what allergens your body has a reaction to.

There are two main factors that can make you susceptible to allergens — host and environmental factors.

Host factors are items that are genetic (race, age, gender, and heredity) while environmental factors are exposure to pollution, diseases, and exposure to high levels of allergens, particularly at a young age. The dangers posed by allergies range from the merely annoying and/or inconvenient (pollen that causes a runny nose) to the truly life threatening (exposure to certain foods, such as shellfish).

Most treatments aim to reduce the discomfort of the symptoms temporarily, and they often come with negative side effects.

Summer Allergies Making You Want to Scream at the Bees? Acupuncture!

Beat Summer Allergies with Acupuncture!

There is nothing better than bicycling with your eyes swollen shut with the love of pollen. Or a game of touch football interrupted by a good nose blow. During the summer, allergies are generally induced by wind-born tree, grass or weed pollen, and can cause such symptoms as sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, watery, itchy or red eyes, headaches, fatigue and sometimes coughing and wheezing. What fun! Summertime!

What’s causing all this awesomeness? An allergy is an immune system disorder that occurs when your body has an inflammatory, hypertensive reaction(the sneezing, etc.) to what is a normally benign substance. Common conditions such as hay fever, eczema, hives and asthma are actually allergic reactions; others include food allergies, responses to bee stings and certain medications. So maybe stop screaming at the bees if you’ve been doing that.

There are several types of tests to gauge exactly what allergens your body has a reaction to (as first dates can be awkward enough without the Surf and Turf turning deadly).

Much more can be said about the conventional understandings of allergies, and there are many varying viewpoints on the causes as well as the treatments of them. Most treatments aim to reduce the discomfort of the symptoms temporarily. The ability to cure the underlying causes to the symptoms is not common. This is where acupuncture can succeed where many treatments cannot.

Acupuncture is one of the major holistic therapies used through thousands of years to address the underlying energetic relationships in the body that enables the allergy symptoms to arise. Treatments aim to give immediate relief from the symptoms, and further, it can address the variety of underlying causes.

The point sites are always on the skin and the surface of the body. A patient will happily experience immediate improvement of the symptoms, and be encouraged therefore to continue to pursue the underlying causes in future treatments. Long term, the symptoms cease to arise and the reactiveness calms. Cease sneezing! Whack wheezing! Huzzah! Touchdown!
