Do I get the child tax credit if my child is 17?
For tax year 2021, the Child Tax Credit is increased from $2,000 per qualifying child to: $3,600 for each qualifying child who has not reached age 6 by the end of 2021, or. $3,000 for each qualifying child age 6 through 17 at the end of 2021.
Who Qualifies. You can claim the Child Tax Credit for each qualifying child who has a Social Security number that is valid for employment in the United States. To be a qualifying child for the 2023 tax year, your dependent generally must: Be under age 17 at the end of the year.
Make sure your dependent meets the IRS requirements. Generally, the IRS requires that the child is under the age of 19 (or under 24 if a full-time student), lives with you for more than half the year, and does not provide more than half of their own financial support.
The credit is calculated based on the amount you earned above $2500 multiplied by 15%, up to the full $1600 per child. If the amount you earned was too low, you will not get the full $1600. If your child is older than 16 at the end of 2023, you do not get the CTC.
Qualifying children can include your son, daughter, stepchild, adopted child or a descendant, foster child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister or a descendant of one of these, provided they are age 18 or younger as of the end of the year (or 23 or young if the child is a full-time student).
To meet the qualifying child test, your child must be younger than you or your spouse if filing jointly and either younger than 19 years old or be a "student" younger than 24 years old as of the end of the calendar year.
The maximum credit amount is $500 for each dependent who meets certain conditions. This credit can be claimed for: Dependents of any age, including those who are age 18 or older. Dependents who have Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification numbers.
How much is the 2024 child tax credit? The maximum tax credit available per kid is $2,000 for each child under 17 on Dec. 31, 2023. Only a portion is refundable this year, up to $1,600 per child.
The bill, called the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, easily passed the House in February with bipartisan support. But it currently remains mired in the Senate, with Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, telling NBC News earlier this month that the bill is "on life support."

For families with MAGI greater than the amounts eligible for the increased credit, the phaseout of the credit begins with $200,000 in income ($400,000 for married filing jointly) and the credit amount is $2,000 for all children under 18 at the end of the tax year.
The Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC) provides up to $1,117 per eligible tax return for tax year 2023. YCTC may provide you with cash back or reduce any tax you owe. California families qualify with earned income of $30,931 or less.
To receive the credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses, the expenses had to have been paid for care to be provided so that you (and your spouse, if filing jointly) could work or look for work. If both spouses do not show "earned income" (W-2's, business income, etc.), you generally cannot claim the credit.
As long as your child still relies on you for financial support, their employment status won't affect your ability to claim them as dependent.
Age – must be under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year, or under the age of 24 if a full-time student for at least five months of the year, or be permanently and totally disabled at any time during the year.

Minors who qualify as dependents on their parent's tax return don't have to file a separate return until their income exceeds certain limits. To be a dependent, a minor must generally: Be under the age of 19 (or 24 if attending school on a full-time basis) Live with their parents for more than 50% of the year.
The credit is $500 per qualifying dependent as long as the adjusted gross income (AGI) doesn't exceed $200,000 ($400,000 if filing jointly). The credit goes down $50 for every $1,000 that the AGI exceeds the $200,000/$400,000 limit. Related Information: What is the Child Tax Credit?
