Do all banks charge for international transfers?
Every bank is different, but in general you can expect them to take as much as 3-4% of your total transfer as a fee when you send money internationally. Thankfully, despite that, a lot of banks will try to cap the amount they charge their customers. This will vary depending on the institution.
Bank/Credit Union | Domestic Outbound | International Inbound |
---|---|---|
Nationwide Bank | $35 | Free |
Navy Federal Credit Union | $14 | Free |
Northpointe Bank | $25 | Not offered |
PenFed Credit Union | $25 | Free |
Currency amount | Charges |
---|---|
Up to INR100,000 | 1% of gross amount exchanged, with a minimum amount of INR250 |
From INR100,000 to INR1,000,000 | INR1,000 plus 0.5% of gross amount exchanged |
Above INR1,000,000 | INR5,500 plus 0.1% of gross amount exchanged, with a maximum of INR60,000 |
Make Cross-Border Payments
Digital wallets are independent of banks and can hold funds in multiple currencies, with transparent exchange rates. Because of this, they can circumvent many of the fees and costs associated with wire transfers, making it even easier to send money abroad, all over the world.
Most banks separate fees into incoming and outgoing wire transfer fees, and whether the transfer is domestic or international. Outgoing wire transfer fees range from $20-35 for domestic transfers, and $35-50 for international transfers. Incoming wire transfers may range from $0 to $16.

Bank transfers are usually the cheapest option when it comes to funding your international money transfer with Wise. Bank transfers can be slower than debit or credit cards, but they usually give you the best value for your money.
How much does SWIFT transfer cost? A SWIFT transfer has multiple charges, such as transfer fees, exchange rates, and hidden fees. Banks charge around 3-5% on the exchange rate for each transfer.
When you make an international payment, it may be processed by one or more other banks before it reaches the bank of the person or company you're paying. Any of these banks could charge for processing the payment, and this could affect the final amount that's received.
What are the disadvantages of international transfer?
International transfers usually cost more compared to local transfers. Once a transfer is made, it's nonreversible. The sender will not be able to get the money back in case he changes his mind. This is risky especially when the transaction is made for paying something, and you don't personally know the receiver.
Using a money transfer service provider is the best way to send money internationally. Costs can vary depending on the amount you're sending, what country you're sending it to, how quickly it needs to arrive, how you pay for it and how it's delivered to the recipient.
If you need to send an international wire transfer, visit any U.S. Bank branch. You'll need the following information: Receiving bank's information: The bank's SWIFT code, their name, and address. Beneficiary information: The recipient's name, account number, and address.

Alternative providers have emerged which use different approaches to moving money overseas, which can help customers avoid the fees applied by banks for international transfers. Alternative international money transfer services like Wise or OFX have created their own payment networks to avoid SWIFT.
Speed, costs and risk are the main reasons companies and individuals opt for bank transfers. ACH usually takes 1 business day, while transaction costs can be as low as 1 USD. On the other hand, SWIFT may take several days and involves a hefty fee of 3-5% of the total amount sent.
Sender (Payer) Fees: The sender's bank may charge fees for initiating a SWIFT payment. These fees can include transaction fees, currency conversion fees, and intermediary bank fees (if applicable). Recipient (Payee) Fees: In some cases, the recipient's bank may also charge fees for receiving a SWIFT payment.
What is the difference between a bank transfer and a wire transfer?
In short, yes: in a wire transfer, the sender's bank acts as an intermediary, sending information about the transfer to the receiver's bank before the money is moved, whereas a bank transfer simply involves sending money directly from one bank account to another.
- You can supply a wrong or inaccurate account number.
- A money transfer may be rejected.
- The payment may be delayed.
- A clerk may have skipped a step during manual processing.
Wire transfers are generally safe and secure, provided you know the person who's receiving them. If you use a legitimate wire transfer service, each person involved in a wire transfer transaction should be required to prove their identity so that anonymous transfers are impossible.
The US's citizenship-based taxation system means that even if you move to another country, you're still subject to taxation. And if you're sending and receiving large amounts of money internationally, that may have implications for your US tax and reporting obligations.
Some may not charge anything, depending on the account you have with a bank while others may charge based on incoming and outgoing wires. It's common to see domestic wires costing about $15 and international wires costing between $25 and $50.
