What does HMRC mean by 'Repayment pending'? (7)

By Southwestbeancounter

Effectively the refund has been 'agreed' but hasn't actually been sent out yet; possibly going through internal security checks but not necessarily. That message usually shows for a few days before the refund is actually repaid.

True then and still true now - although 'few days' now tends to be 'many months'.

But is this evidence that Sift's AI has a sense of humour ... resuscitating this timeless (and pointless) classic in time for its 7th birthday!

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/check-when-you-can-expect-a-reply-from-hmrc

One can check current processing times. For SA repayment currently processing claims made on 21st of March.

Separately on https://www.gov.uk/claim-tax-refund one can see typical timelines i.e. "about 2 weeks for online SA refund, do not contact us before 4 weeks lapsed".

I guess they are still busy with belated 31st January claims and now hit with fresh claims.

Yes agreed bajones if they run security checks. Usually the refunds that take a ridiculous time to turn up don't show as pending for months on end. If they do then something has gone wrong and you need to ring HMRC to get it shifted.

You will wait a long time and maybe get a repayment - but you know this

Last one I had (it was a CIS refund) ended up as an enquiry case though, to be fair, they settled and repaid very quickly once I sent them the requested information.

In addition to the points already made, I have had instances with large refunds where HMRC have simply been waiting for someone (client or authorised Agent) to phone and ask why the repayment has not been made. This seems to complete their security checks on whether the claim was a genuine one or not.

I happen to have a large number of CIS sub-contractor clients who usually get repayments in April/May.

Usually "repayment pending" status shows on the GG for 3-5 days and then payment is released. If payment is not released after 5 w.d. we usually just call HMRC up and they manually release it in few days.

Your repayment has been sent for checks this could take anything from 5days-6month to get repayment hmrc can not chase the checks up until 28days have passed mine is the same repayment pending is a rather large amount so is expected last year took 10days to get payment year before 12days this year for that reason still waitting

Hi. I sent my self assessment in on the 6th of april and it went to bank repayment pending the next day. But numerous phone calls since then to them they tell me it will be anything up to 4 weeks from the date you submitted it. Now i rang yesterday and the bloke said if you havent heard anything by the 25th of may then call us back. Nobody said anything about 8 weeks

For crying out loud. HMRC is a Government department often targeted by fraudsters trying to get free money out of them. As such, they have to be as sure as they can be that the repayment is properly due.

HMRC are not staffed entirely by honest people, and it isn't unheard of for staff to defraud the system, meaning checks on their own processes also have to be made.

The result of this is that some repayment selected for checks (either because something is flagged, or randomly) will inevitably be delayed whilst those checks are finished. With thousands of repayments a day being processed, this is a time consuming process. Each check is made manually.

Complaining that it's a few days late will achieve nothing. Give them time.

...added to which a number of those chipping in above seem to be regular, 4 figure repayment claims each year. Whilst I can easily imagine why that might be the fact that some may be checked at random each year is not unlikely or unreasonable.

Just think, had a few of you used an accountant, you would have completed the return correctly, and the repayment would have been sat in your bank by now.

Thanks (1)

What does HMRC mean by 'Repayment pending'? (54)

By paulfield

15th May 2017 16:52

that's not the case what so ever, as the last 2 years i used an accountant but this year did my own, i asked the person i spoke too when i called if i used an Accountant would it be quicker and he said No, doesn't make a difference, after reading all the posts on various forums there's a lot more this year on Payments Pending than any other year so too me, it could be a new system they've brought in ? ....

Thanks (0)

the suggestion is that if the return was completed correctly (filling in the repayment section correctly etc) that this may reduce the delay. I don't think it said that by using an accountant would be quicker in all circ*mstances.
