U.S. Bank Cash+ Review

4.5 / 5

The U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card is a good cash back credit card for people with good or excellent credit who want the opportunity to earn lots of bonus rewards without paying an annual fee. The U.S. Bank Cash+ offer starts with an easy-to-earn sign-up bonus: $200 for spending $1,000 in the first 120 days. There’s no letup with its ongoing rewards, either, as cardholders earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 spent in two bonus categories each quarter, plus unlimited 2% cash back in one quarterly bonus category and 1% back on everything else.

The U.S. Bank Cash+ Card has a $0 annual fee, but you do have to pay a price in terms of hassle and uncertainty if you want to enjoy its high rewards earning rates. Cardholders must register their chosen bonus categories each quarter to get the 2% and 5% cash back rates. Only eligible purchases made after registration and before the quarter’s end qualify. And the categories available for cardholders to choose from are subject to change, so it’s hard to forecast how well it will suit your spending habits.

U.S. Bank Cash Plus Review Highlights

  • Nice Sign-Up Bonus. At $200 for spending $1,000 within 120 days of opening an account, you’re earning 20% back right off the bat. And that’s in addition to the normal rewards you’ll get for those initial purchases. The average initial bonus on a cash back credit card is$228.
  • Pick Two 5% Rewards Categories Each Quarter. Get 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in total purchases each quarter in two spending categories. You get to pick the categories, but only from U.S. Bank’s list of available options for that particular quarter. The categories are subject to change, and you’ll only earn the bonus rate on purchases made after you register your category choices for the quarter.
  • Pick One 2% Rewards Category Each Quarter. U.S. Bank Cash+ gives unlimited 2% cash back in a category of your choice. The only downside is you have to register your chosen category each quarter, or you’ll earn 1% back on purchases that would otherwise qualify. Plus, there’s no guarantee your favorite category will always be an option.
  • No Annual Fee. The U.S. Bank Cash+ Card’s $0 annual fee makes it $22.29per year cheaper than the average credit card. Many bonus cash back credit cards charge a lot more than that, too.
  • Best for Everyday Purchases. U.S. Bank Cash+ is not the card to use for purchases that will take a long time to pay off, considering its APR could be 19.49% - 29.74% (V), depending on your creditworthiness. There’s a 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on new purchases.
  • Above-Average Balance Transfer Offer. At 0% for 15 billing cycles with a 3% (min $5) fee, the U.S. Bank Cash+ Card’s transfer terms are good comparedto what the average 0% balance transfer card brings to the table: 0% for13 months with a 3.1% fee.
  • Not the Best for International Use. U.S. Bank Cash Plus is a chip-and-PIN credit card, which makes it easier to use abroad and more secure overall. But that bit of international appeal is offset by the card’s 3% foreign transaction fee.

People with a credit score of 700+ have the best odds of being approved for the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card. You can check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub.

To get the U.S. Bank Cash+ card sign-up bonus, new cardholders must spend $1,000 within the first 120 days of opening an account. The U.S. Bank Cash+ card bonus is $200.

The U.S. Bank Cash+ starting credit limit is between $1,000 - $1,500, but that's not a given.

Your credit limit is decided based on many factors, such as your income, existing debts, credit history and overall creditworthiness.

More specifically, with the U.S. Bank Cash+ you get 5% cash back on two categories of your choice (up to $2,000 each quarter), 5% back on prepaid air, hotel and car reservations booked in the Rewards Center, 2% on your choice of one everyday category (like gas stations, grocery stores or restaurants) and 1% on all other purchases. If you don't select your cash back categories each quarter, you won't receive any bonus cash back other than 1%, which applies to all purchases.

How much is the U.S. Bank Cash+ cash advance limit?

@paula1000

The U.S. Bank Cash+ card's cash advance limit isn't disclosed. Each cardholder's cash advance limit will be determined based on their credit limit and creditworthiness. There's no way to know your exact limit before being approved for the card.

But you shouldn't decide on a credit card because of its cash advance limit. Cash advances should be avoided, anyway. They are too expensive to be worth it.

I would love to give it more stars, but as others are saying, the 5% cash back can be ridiculously troublesome—and perhaps it's best to look elsewhere for other similar cards.

One of my 5% categories was 'Electronics'—you'd think Samsung Electronics and Sonos would apply, right? Nope, here's your 1%.

And I will have to call, wait weeks, etc., to get a review of IF they can change it—a bit too much hassle for something that should be clear-cut/simple.

US-Bank could hold your money for 7-10 business days after it has been cleared from your checking account before being applied towards your credit card statement balance.

You have to call their so-called customer service during business hours and be kept on the line for 20-30 minutes while they call your bank on a conference call, listening to your confidential information as your bank verifies your identity. This occurs even though you had already consented to the payment when you initiated it on the US-Bank app.

Essentially, they withhold access to your funds for several business days, so you cannot use it either through your checking account or as available credit on your US-Bank credit card. You're required to call their customer service to prompt them to apply the payment towards the statement balance. If your bank's policy does not allow for this process without visiting a branch since they have already cleared the funds, you must take time off work to resolve an issue that US-Bank has created for a transaction that should take just 2 minutes through the app. This issue does not arise with any other credit card I have ever had, except for this US-Bank Cash Plus credit card.

The 5% categories are somewhat misleading. They will selectively cover only a sliver of what you might expect to be included in the categories. I recently purchased a sectional sofa from West Elm, which I think everyone could reasonably expect to be included under "furniture stores." Indeed, the merchant code came through as code 5719 "Miscellaneous Home Furnishing Specialty Stores," which sounds like it would fit. However, US Bank decided that they would only cover code 5712 "Furniture, Home Furnishings, and Equipment Stores, Except Appliances."

In speaking with customer service, I received repeated statements of "we're sorry, we can't control how the merchants decide to categorize their transactions" without taking any responsibility whatsoever for their choice to pretend that "home furnishing specialty stores" aren't furniture stores. This ended up being approximately $80 of cash back rewards that was taken away.

If you're looking for a card with categories you regularly use, you can discover over time what is or isn't included in that category. For this card, when you intend to change categories frequently to take advantage of good rewards on big purchases, you don't have the chance to feel it out, and you're just counting on the card issuer to be trustworthy and define their categories appropriately.

US Bank is not trustworthy in that way, and will take every opportunity to rip you off.

I have a $248,000 income, 785 credit score, 4% credit card usage level, 100% on time payments, no negative remarks on my credit history, and 3 other credit cards - each with a $19,000 limit, $14,000 limit, and $12,000 limit respectively. I applied for this card because of potential rewards I could not get with my existing credit cards. The approval process was exceptionally long and drawn out - taking numerous weeks, and they finally gave me a $500 credit limit. This wouldn’t even cover the major item I wanted to buy at the store I wanted to use the card for rewards at. This is the only credit card I have applied for in a year because I make it a point not to apply for more than one or take too many credit inquiry hits. What a waste of an annual application. To think I chose this card over 5 other ones I was considering. Completely and utterly useless.

Also, I just found out that every time you request a credit increase, they will do a HARD credit check. No other credit card I have does this. They only do a hard check when you apply, and soft pulls when you request an increase. So it feels like to get this horrendous $500 limit card anywhere to a point where it could be useful, I would have to suffer a plethora of hard inquiries visible on my credit report. Who would want that? What is US Bank thinking? Why is a hard credit check even necessary for a credit limit increase when so many other credit card companies and banks have no need for this?

I was prepared to build a relationship with this bank and even open a bank account, and use some of their other services. But this is a terrible start and given these backwards-thinking policies that negatively impact their customers and do not compare well to other banks/card companies, I am seriously reconsidering having any other relationship with them and taking my business elsewhere. This card might just wind up sitting on the shelf.

This is clearly the worst rewards card I have ever made the mistake of choosing. Even once you get past the incredibly annoying process of logging into the rewards website (not part of US Bank website) and select your rewards categories for the quarter, the rewards are not clearly earnable based on the system described on the website. My expenses at "Qualified Grocery Merchants" (Harris Teeter, Publix) are not considered "Grocery". My expenses at "Qualified Ground Transportation" (Uber, Lyft) are not considered "Ground Transportation". Sure, the website warns "not all vendors are coded the same", but I have been trying for months at "Qualified Merchants" and been unsuccessful in earning a single rewards points. Please save yourself and avoid this card at all costs.

US Bank called me in 2013 and sold me on upgrading my card. My old card was closed out and all of my credit history erased. To this day I am still effected by this since it was my oldest card by 10 years. They also changed the UI on their site causing me to miss two payments.. they added a second submit button when previously there was only one button. So to put it simply, US Bank had a big effect on making my life much more difficult than it should have been. I had 14 cards at the time and not a single issue...

But honestly, I have tried to get my interest rate lower my credit good but because they lock me in on high interest said once my credit was good they would lower my interest. But now my credit good they do not want to lose the money they make on my interest and keep it high. and will not even try to help me out right now in my time of need. they have made a lot of money and I feel they could help me out.
