Love the feeling of conquering a challenge? Or perhaps after a career path that allows you to give back to others, no matter how tough the personal sacrifice is that you have to make? Escape the 9-5 grind by considering one of the jobs on this list of the world’s hardest jobs.

Firefighter

The role of a firefighter is one of the toughest jobs you could take on. Firefighters are on call 24/7 and are some of the first responders in emergency situations like fires, car crashes, water rescue and chemical spills.

In addition to being physically demanding and dangerous, firefighters also face a great deal of emotional stress. Of course, firefighters are also rewarded with a level of job satisfaction not offered by many jobs.

Police Officer

Similar to firefighters, police officers have one of the most dangerous jobs possible. From being the first responders in emergency situations to putting their lives on the line every day, police officers face not only physical risks but also a great strain on their mental health. At the same time, police officers are able to make a tangible difference to the communities and people they care about.

Paramedic

Paramedics deal with confronting situations every single day, responding to accidents and medical emergencies. Often dealing with violent patients, paramedics face a great deal of personal risk as well as mental pressure. If you have a heart of gold and plenty of grit, this challenging career path could be for you.

Airline Pilot

Airline pilots must build up years of experience and training before they can sit in the co*ckpit, usually having to clock up 1000 hours before they can become certified. Dealing with delays, long hours, unruly passengers and even emergency situations, pilots are highly rewarded for their work in one of the world’s most stressful jobs.

Astronaut

Astronauts are subject to intense physical fitness requirements and must be able to deal with mental isolation and crisis situations. However, the unique experiences astronauts get to enjoy certainly seem to make these pressures worth it!

Search and Rescue

Search and rescue teams have to deal with all sorts of life or death situations, rescuing people from perilous locations. Whether you choose to work on the waters or in the mountains, your physical and mental limits will be challenged each and every day. If you have a passion for nature, athleticism and helping others, a career in search and rescue could be highly rewarding.

Public School Teacher

Teachers typically work long hours, preparing class content, teaching and marking. From dealing with rowdy students to sometimes even rowdier parents, teachers are under a great deal of mental pressure. However, the chance to help students flourish makes teaching a very rewarding and enjoyable career path, despite its challenges.

Truck Driver

Sometimes overlooked when thinking of hard jobs, truck drivers often work long hours to meet the expectations placed on them. Factoring in fatigue and isolation, truck drivers have a demanding job that often keeps them away from their families for weeks at a time.

Farmer

Farming is an incredibly labour-intensive job, and often quite a solitary endeavour as well. With extra stress being placed on farmers due to current drought conditions, we can all certainly admire the hard work of these providers.

These difficult jobs typically see high job vacancies due to their demanding nature. If you love a challenge or the opportunity to give back to your community, a career in one of these roles could present strong prospects and security. Keen on one of these tough jobs?
