- On March 29, 2024, Good Friday, Biden’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)rolled outits new electric truck mandate, which will require that electric semi-trucks make up an increasing share of manufacturer sales from 2027 through 2032, similar to its recent rule for passenger cars.
- There’s a newreportout though, from Roland Berger and published by the Clean Freight Coalition, which stresses the unaffordability and impracticality of the rules and regulations, as they stand:

- There are 124 cities with a population over 200,000 in the U.S. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s populationestimatesfor last year, more than 90% of the U.S. population growth last year took place outside of its 124 largest cities.
- Roughly a third of those that lost population were located inNew YorkandCalifornia. The three largest cities in the U.S., New York, Los Angeles, andChicago, all lost population again in 2023. Between the three cities, more than 700,000 people have left since the 2020 census. New York is by far the biggest loser at 546,000. That is about 6.2% of its 2020 population.
- Texashad the most cities with more than 200,000 residents gained, with 14. Several of its suburban cities, such as Frisco, Round Rock, and Denton, grew at jaw-dropping rates of up to 5% in a single year. Texas’ five largest cities, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin, all had positive population growth. However, all, with the exception of Fort Worth, had growth rates that were well below the state average. San Antonio and Fort Worth had the absolute most new residents of any U.S. city, with just under 22,000 each.
- Floridais home to nine cities with more than 200,000. All of those had growth rates at about three times the national average. Its largest city, Jacksonville, will likely be the first city in Florida to exceed 1 million residents later this decade. The individual city numbers are a little misleading for Florida because it has a large number of medium-sized cities. If you have ever driven the Atlantic coast, you know that it is almost a nonstop chain of city after city.
- Cities in the Carolinas also had impressive growth rates. Charlotte,North Carolina’s largest city, grew by 1.74%. Several of Las Vegas’ suburbs also saw significant growth last year.

- United States tariffs on China-made imports have helped rescue America’s left-behind textile industry from devastation after decades of free trade that came with mass layoffs of the nation’s textile workers.
- Ferrara Manufacturing CEO Joseph Ferrara credited tariffs on Chinese imports for helping revive his manufacturing business based in New York City, New York. Those tariffs include those on textile goods from China first imposed by former President Donald Trump and continued by President Joe Biden.
- “I will impose an across-the-board tariff on foreign-made goods,” Trump has said on the campaign trail. “I will also pass the Trump Reciprocal Trade Act. If China or any other country makes us pay a 100 or 200 percent tariff, we will make them pay a reciprocal tariff of 100 or 200 percent right back.”

- The U.S. economy grew less than previously thought in the first three months of the year, expanding at an annual pace of just 1.3 percent, revised government data showed Thursday.
- The downward revision was primarily driven by data showing that consumer spending grew by significantly less than previously estimated.
- This was the smallest expansion in gross domestic product in almost two years. The prior estimate had the economy growing at a 1.6 percent pace in the first quarter
- Consumer spending grew an an annualized pace of two percent in the first quarter, the new figures show, down from the previous estimate of 2.5 percent. In the second half of last year, consumer spending had expanded at a better than three percent rate.
- The slowdown in consumer spending is likely related to inflation, which has pinched household buying power. What’s more, most of the excess savings built up during the pandemic due to stimulus programs and Covid-related economic repression has been spent.
- The biggest contributors to the slowdown since last year were a widening trade deficit and a smaller increase in business inventories. Businesses tend to cut back on inventories when they expect sales to be sluggish

- Could the world be creeping closer to a monetary gold standard?
- Steve Forbes sees signs that it is.
- In a recentarticle published byForbes Magazine, Steve Forbes wrote that it may seem hard to believe, but the world is “beginning to lurch toward a gold-based monetary system.”
- Forbes argued that this disdain for a gold standard is misplaced, pointing out that during the 180 years that the dollar was tied to gold, the U.S. enjoyed the greatest long-term growth in human history without the ravages of price inflation.
- “Since the greenback’s link to gold was severed, our average historic growth rates have fallen by about a third. Median household income today would be at least $40,000 higher if our traditional pattern of growth for those 180 years had been maintained. Nonetheless, the contumely and scorn for a goldbased monetary system is universal.”
- This is exactly how a gold standard is supposed to work. It limits the amount the money supply can grow and constrains government spending.
- Forbes points out four signs that point to a return to some kind of monetary gold standard.
- 1. Central Bank Gold Buying
- Central banks have been gobbling up gold at a record pace. Last year,central bank gold buyingfell just 45 tons short of 2022’s multi-decade record.
- According to the World Gold Council, central banks’ net gold purchases totaled 1,037 tons in 2023. It was the second straight year central banks added more than 1,000 tons to their total reserves.
- Central bank gold buying in 2023 built on the prior record year. Total central bank gold buying in 2022 came in at 1,136 tons. It was the highest level of net purchases on record dating back to 1950, including since the suspension of dollar convertibility into gold in 1971.
- China, India, Russia, Turkey, and other emerging market banks have driven this buying spree.
- “These countries are reacting to growing doubts about the long-term value of the dollar, which in turn is a symptom of the perceived decline of the United States,” Forbes wrote.
- 2. The Rise of Cryptocurrencies
- Forbes argues that the growing interest in crypto is a “high-tech cry for help in the face of increasingly unreliable fiat currencies.”
- 3. The Binge of Debt Creation
- As already noted, fiat money systems incentivize debt. We see this playing out today with government, corporate, and personal debt at record levels. Much of the United States’s economic growth over the last 18 months has beenput on credit cards.
- Debt isn’t just a problem in the U.S. Global debt has grown to $300 trillion, three times global GDP.
- This is unsustainable. Forbes argues that debt “will inevitably kindle crises that cannot be easily extinguished.”
- 4. The Rise of BRICS
- BRICS is an economic cooperation bloc originally made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. As of Jan. 1, 2024, the bloc expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia. More than 40 other nations have expressed interest in BRICS membership.
- BRICS countries have floated the idea of an alternative currency to compete with the dollar, along withnew payment systemsthat would dent U.S. economic hegemony.
