Income ranges for what's considered middle class have changed significantly over the years. Depending on where you live and how much you earn can determine which income class your household falls into. So what salary currently qualifies as "middle class"?

A new report fromGOBankingRatespulled data from theU.S. Census Bureauto determine what pay grade is considered middle class for all 50 states. Middle class income is defined as households with a salary that is two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income, according to the Pew Research Center.

Middle class income in U.S.

According to latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the nation's average median household income in 2022 was $73,914, which would put the national range for the middle class income between $49,271 to $147,828. New Jersey topped the list of 50 states with a median income of $96,346 and Mississippi had the lowest median income in the nation at $52,719, according to Census Bureau data. (Washington D.C's median income was higher - at $101,027 and Puerto Rico was lower at $24,112.)

Middle class income in New York

In New York, the median income in 2022 was $79,557 - above the national median household income in the United States for 2022, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Households in the Empire State could earn between $54,257 and $162,772 and be considered middle class, which is a 41% increase over the range one decade ago, according to GOBankingRates.com.
