In attempting to create human scale and connection, the creators have opted to fill much of the runtime with rather ordinary drama that fails to align with the magnitude of the planetary challenge, and seems at times intended to stretch the season out by a few more episodes. The American adaptation has also been criticized for taking cultural and story liberties. All that said, the premise is so compelling that it more or less manages to carry the season.
